One way designers make it harder for clients to choose 😬

Hello and happy Tuesday, interior designers and home remodel pros!

Let's talk about a sneaky way we can make design decisions harder than they need to be:

SHOWING CLIENTS TOO MANY OPTIONS.

Imagine you've found two fantastic flooring options for your client. Both fit their needs, both work with the design, and you'd be happy with either choice.

But TWO options? That feels a little... skimpy. Won't the client wonder whether you've done enough research? Shouldn't you show them at least THREE? πŸ€”

So you find another one. It's not as strong as the other two, but it's fine, and it rounds out the presentation.

And wouldn't you know it, THAT'S the one your client falls in love with. πŸ™„

Here's the thing: Your client doesn't need to see everything that could work. They hired YOU to narrow the possibilities to the best options for their project!

When we include options that don't offer anything meaningfully different, or worse, that don't measure up to the ones we already planned to recommend, we're not giving clients more freedom. We're giving them more work.

SOMETHING TO TRY THIS WEEK:

Before your next presentation, look at every option you're planning to show and ask yourself: "What does this option offer my client that the others don't?"

If you can't come up with a meaningful answer, consider taking it out.

Being a great guide isn't about giving clients ALL the options. It's about using your expertise to figure out which options are worth their time and attention.

That's one of the key lessons of EDIT, step two in the DECIDE Method, and it's a great way to save everyone time, energy, and the awkward experience of having to talk your client OUT of something you recommended in the first place.

Ask me how I know. πŸ˜‚

Happy Tuesday, interior designers and book lovers! Know what I hear a lot? Designers wish their clients would be a little more... adventurous. πŸ… They got into this industry to use color! To create spaces with personality! To bring a little drama into a too-often-drab world. Meanwhile, their clients keep asking for a design that looks just like every other one on the block... you know, for "resale value." πŸ˜‘ There's good work to be had in high-ROI design, but what if you're hoping to leave a...

Happy Tuesday, interior designers and small business owners! Ever doubt the value of your own services? You're in good company! Last week I was helping an interior designer define her furnishings service. While we were working on the service descriptions, she stopped and asked: "Why would someone hire me just to pick a sofa?" She's right to ask that! If all you're offering is a sofa recommendation, your potential client might reasonably think, "I can do that myself." And technically, they...

Happy Thursday interior designers and small business owners! Interior designers tell me all the time that every project is different. And they’re right. The house is different. The client is different. The budget, the personalities, the contractor, the weird thing hiding behind the wall... all different. But somewhere along the way, β€œevery project is different” can become permission to reinvent the process every time, too. That is a good way to ruin a great design firm. 😬 β†’ Customize the...
