Knowing what you want isn't the same as doing what you want 💡

Happy Thursday, interior designers and small business owners!

First, a special welcome to the 16 (!!) new readers who joined us yesterday. 😀 You’ve landed right in the middle of a conversation about figuring out what kind of design business you actually want to run.

Read about how my design-only firm reached $425K in revenue without relying on procurement. Catch up here →

On Tuesday, I asked y'all whether you would have wanted my design-only, modest-budget, one-room-at-a-time clients, and a number of you immediately wrote back:

YES. THAT’S ME. 🤚

Here’s what was interesting:

Not everyone who replied "I LOVE design-only work" is actually doing design-only work.

Does that mean they’re doing something wrong? Of course not. Every business model has tradeoffs.

The important question is:

Is your business giving you the work and lifestyle you want?

Now, before you decide, “AHA! I hate procurement. I should stop offering it,” ask yourself what you actually hate.

🦄 Maybe you actually LOVE procurement with that unicorn client who trusts you, makes decisions, respects the budget, doesn’t shop your selections, and follows the process.

If every client behaved like that client, would you still hate procurement?

If yes... maybe it’s time to see what your business would look like if you stopped offering it, or at least stopped marketing for it. 🤔

But if it's more like, “Actually, procurement would be fine if my clients would just follow the freaking process 👍 ... then you may not have an attraction problem.

You may have a preparation problem.

If the right clients aren’t finding you or aren’t understanding why your particular service is right for them, that’s Nail Your Niche territory.

If you’re getting clients but they don’t arrive prepared to work the way your service requires, that’s Contact to Contract territory.

And if you have no idea which problem you actually have? Perfect. 😀

Take the What To Fix Next? diagnostic quiz.

It’ll help you figure out whether your biggest opportunity is attracting the right clients, preparing them better, or guiding them more confidently once the project starts.

Nail Your Niche starts September 14.

If you know what you're trying to sell and really need to get better at selling it, join me and let's get it done. 💪

Wishing you a Seriously Happy Thursday!

💛 Rebecca

Well, hello there — have we met?

I’m Rebecca West. I help residential interior designers feel seriously confident about their marketing, sales, and client onboarding.

Everything I teach comes from running my firm, Seriously Happy Homes, for 17 years. Between 2007 and 2023, my team and I helped over 2,000 clients transform their small, tired houses into happy homes. 💛 Our work, and my book Happy Starts at Home, was featured on TV’s New Day, in The Wall Street Journal, Live Happy Magazine, Success Magazine, & beyond!

Then, in 2023, I closed my design studio and moved to Paris, and, a couple of years later, to the south of France. ( 🤩 !! )

As a coach, consultant, and gal-who's-been-there, I'm here to help the next generation of creative, hardworking, detail-oriented interior designers get found, get great clients, and get paid like a pro!

Let’s make it happen for you!

Happy Tuesday, interior designers and small business owners! Here's a fun fact: A lot of interior designers would not have wanted my clients' projects. The question is... Would you? 👀 Their homes were usually under 3,000 square feet. Budgets ranged from about $60K for a hall bath remodel to $500K for a home addition. They didn’t want to pay us to manage construction. They didn’t want to pay furniture markups. Nearly all of them lived within about nine miles of my Seattle office. I freaking...

Happy Thursday interior designers and small business owners! A quick one today. 🙂 If your About page mostly explains where you came from, what you’ve done, and how you became a designer, it may be leaving some of your best marketing on the table. When I recently helped a student in my Nail Your Niche class rewrite hers, she didn't need to make her story more impressive. She just needed help connecting the dots. Her previous career, childhood home, project experience, and design instincts were...
