Happy Tuesday Interior Designers & eager design-preneurs!
Question of the day: What kind of designer are you — really?
I don’t mean "What services do you offer?"
I mean: Are you more “banana bread and brownies,” or “we have a checklist, no time for chit-chat?” 🤔
Some designers make clients feel cared for, cozy, and emotionally held from the very first interaction. Their clients value warmth, reassurance, and someone who makes the process feel personal, safe, and deeply supported.
Other designers make clients feel like the grown-up has entered the room — which is exactly the experience those clients were hoping to hire for. They don’t want a new best friend. They want structure, clarity, momentum, and a confident leader who turns ideas into decisions.
Neither type of designer is better.
The problem starts when a designer starts believing she needs to be something she’s not.
The warm, chatty, deeply relational designer thinks she has to sound more “luxury” and buttoned-up.
The highly organized, process-driven designer thinks she has to sound softer, sweeter, and more hand-holdy.
Next thing you know, the very thing that would make the right clients say, “Oh thank goodness. This is exactly who I need,” gets buried under what we think a “good designer” is supposed to sound like. 😢
If you’re attracting clients who drive you crazy, it might not be them.
It might be your website, message, and marketing.
(That’s exactly the kind of thing we work on in Nail Your Niche. 😉)
The goal isn’t to become a more acceptable, generic, market-approved version of yourself. The goal is to make the real you easier for the right clients to recognize.
That’s harder than it sounds, because it requires fighting back against all those little voices that tell you to sound more polished.
More luxurious.
More accommodating.
More like that designer on Instagram who makes you just a little green with envy.
But you don’t need to be more like them.
You need to be more clearly you.
Because when your marketing matches who you really are, you stop trying to win over everyone. You start attracting the people who already want you.
Brownies included.
Or not.
If your marketing feels a little borrowed, blurred, or beige, think about enrolling in this fall’s Nail Your Niche cohort. Enrolling now means we’ll do your marketing audit right away, so you can start class not just prepared, but already in motion.

Well, hello there — have we met?
I’m Rebecca West. I help residential interior designers feel seriously confident about their marketing, sales, and client onboarding.
Everything I teach comes from running my firm, Seriously Happy Homes, for 17 years. Between 2007 and 2023, my team and I helped over 2,000 clients transform their small, tired houses into happy homes. 💛 Our work, and my book Happy Starts at Home, was featured on TV’s New Day, in The Wall Street Journal, Live Happy Magazine, Success Magazine, & beyond!
Then, in 2023, I closed my design studio and moved to Paris, and, a couple of years later, to the south of France. ( 🤩 !! )
As a coach, consultant, and gal-who's-been-there, I'm here to help the next generation of creative, hardworking, detail-oriented interior designers get found, get great clients, and get paid like a pro!
Let’s make it happen for you!
