Your design biz is different. Does your marketing show it? 🤔

Happy Thursday Interior Designers & enthusiastic design-preneurs!

It's time to talk about MARKETING! 🎉

Let's kick things off with the elephant in the room:

Apparently, every interior designer in North America:

  • creates "thoughtful, curated interiors"
  • thinks "your home should tell your story"
  • believes "your home should reflect who you are"
  • designs "elevated spaces"
  • and provides "a personalized experience"

Ermmmmm… yah. That’s the job. Which means that those words do absolutely NOTHING - like zero, zilch, and diddly-squat - for your SEO or for helping someone choose you.

The thing that breaks my little business heart is that while every designer's website says the same generic thing, the designers themselves couldn't be more different.

  • One designer specializes in furnishing historic homes. 🏠
  • Another manages $2 million renovations. đź’Ž
  • Another helps empty nesters right-size before retirement. đź’›

Different businesses. Different areas of expertise. Same website.

And they don’t just differ in skills. They differ in scope, process, pricing, sourcing, communication style, project type, and client experience.

Yet in coaching sessions, when I ask designers, "What makes you different?" they answer:

  • "I listen."
  • "I'm collaborative."
  • "I care deeply about my clients."

Again, that is wonderful. But if your competitors also listen, collaborate, and care deeply, none of those things help a client choose.

Marketing doesn’t start with creating a post, writing a blog, or updating your homepage. It starts with finding the courage to say, clearly and unapologetically, what you are best at and who you are best for.

The cool thing is that marketing gets way easier — and dramatically more effective — when you start explaining what you do through the lens of what you’re genuinely great at. 💪

But until you're crystal clear about who you help, what you stand for, and what makes your approach different, too much of your marketing misses the mark — failing to attract the exact clients you’re best equipped to help.

Today, I’d like to ask you:

What are you afraid might happen if you got specific about the exact clients, projects, and scopes of work you’re best at? 👀

Hit reply and tell me!

Here's to courage, confidence, and clarity! 🥂

Well, hello there — have we met?

I’m Rebecca West. I help residential interior designers feel seriously confident about their marketing, sales, and client onboarding.

Everything I teach comes from running my firm, Seriously Happy Homes, for 17 years. Between 2007 and 2023, my team and I helped over 2,000 clients transform their small, tired houses into happy homes. 💛 Our work, and my book Happy Starts at Home, was featured on TV’s New Day, in The Wall Street Journal, Live Happy Magazine, Success Magazine, & beyond!

Then, in 2023, I closed my design studio and moved to Paris, and, a couple of years later, to the south of France. ( 🤩 !! )

As a coach, consultant, and gal-who's-been-there, I'm here to help the next generation of creative, hardworking, detail-oriented interior designers get found, get great clients, and get paid like a pro!

Let’s make it happen for you!

Happy Thursday, Designers & Savvy Service Providers! Let's adapt Tuesday's reveal for your brand! On Tuesday, I shared how Josepha adapted her message for contractors without abandoning the heart of her brand. Her homeowner-facing message is: Find Your Bold. Her contractor-facing message is: Bold decisions. Buildable designs.Design support that keeps remodels moving. Different words. Same business. And that is the point. Your message can change outfits. It just should not change...

Happy Tuesday, Designers & Savvy Service Providers! Let’s talk taglines. A few simple words, meant to capture the heart of your brand. They can take ages to find and refine, and once you finally discover language that explains what makes your business different, it's tempting to treat those words like they've been carved into a stone tablet. This is the tagline. We shall use it forever. Nobody touch anything. But clear messaging does not mean repeating the exact same sentence to every...

Happy Thursday Designers and Creative Entrepreneurs, On Tuesday I gave you a quick test: Copy the titles of your last 10 blog posts into ChatGPT and ask what your business does, who you help, and what problems you solve. Today, I’m showing you what happened when I ran that test on two real interior design blogs. And spoiler: both designers were doing smart things, but in very different ways. One designer’s blog titles made her location and service lane crystal clear. The other designer’s...
